The Yolanda was a ship that was in the wrong place
at the wrong time. During a very bad storm on April 1st, 1981 this Cypriot freighter got caught on of the southern reef mounts facing the southern coast of the Ras Mohamed peninsula which would later bear its name. Much more famous in its demise than during its sea-faring days, a reef, beach, and bay were named after this ship where it sank. |
But this was not to be the end
of its tale. In fact, the Yolanda remained lodged on the reef for five years until a second similar storm broke it in three parts which drifted away in the deep blue 200 meters below that. While it was slipping away, some of the containers on board, as well as some fuselage decided to forgo the eternal, and final trip to the deep and are to be found at a depth of about 30 meters south of Yolanda Reef. These containers include, among other things, toilet bowls, wash basins, heaters, steel been and plastic lining. There is also a BMW 320 in relatively good condition found amongst the scattered cargo.
